Kathryn farms on about seventy acres of land, her fields spread between the parishes of Steeple, Church Knowle and Kingston.
Her 130 ewes are all Dorset Poll. These are served by four rams: three of these
are Dorset Poll, the fourth is a Charolais, used to ensure easy lambing for ewes
pregnant for the first time. There are three lambing periods (or "lambings") in
a year, the maximum number of lambings per ewe would be three in two years
space here for certifications, qualifications and the like
Kathryn explains her farming methods and philosophy:
"We manage them naturally outdoors as much as possible.
We don't use any sprays, we do make use of homeopathic as well
as allopathic (i e conventional) medicine.
"Dorset Poll sheep are of a relatively placid disposition. Our sheep are divided into smallish groups, and we find that they are very happy with this arrangement.
"During the summer months the ewes lamb outdoors, while we keep a watchful eye on their progress. This enables stress to be minimised: they find their own spot to lamb, and can wander around during the process."
